The German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) is the main geo-scientific institute providing advice to the German federal government in all geo-relevant questions. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia (MET) and BGR, within the framework of the German-Mongolian Development Cooperation and on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), jointly implement the project “Environmentally Responsible Mining”, (ERM) until September 30th, 2026.

For the ERM project, BGR is seeking a dedicated and qualified “Environmental Rehabilitation Expert”. The position will entail the following duties:

 Co-development of concepts and operation plans for the project

 design, planning and execution of activities related to the rehabilitation of abandoned and damaged mining areas including those related to biological rehabilitation in various vegetation zones.

 needs assessment with national and local governments, civil society organizations and private sector entities related to their capacity to implement rehabilitation and mine closures activities

 advisory services for local governments and companies to assist them in the development and implementation of their respective rehabilitation and mine closures activities

 monitoring and evaluation of said activities

 execution of general tasks and responsibilities in close coordination with ERM colleagues

Required qualifications, competencies and experience:

   Master’s degree in environmental science or comparable field

   5 years of professional experience in a similar position 

   Highly developed communication and negotiation skills in Mongolian and English, language skills in German would be an asset

  Ability to interact with different stakeholder groups

  Ability to mitigate and align different expectations and needs in multi-stakeholder processes

  Ability to responsibly execute project activities, follow-up on appointments, execute general management tasks, keep deadlines 

   Ability to work independently but in close coordination with colleagues from the ERM team 

   Working Experience in other reputable organizations (international organizations, bilateral agencies, private sector) active in her field
