Mongolia is set to revise its Law on Nuclear Energy with new amendments and related legislative changes. The draft law has been submitted to the State Great Khural (Parliament of Mongolia) for urgent consideration, in line with Article 33.1 of the Law on the Procedure of the sessions of the State Great Khural of Mongolia
Since 1972, Mongolia has been a committed party to several international treaties and conventions concerning nuclear non-proliferation inlcuding the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the Agreement on the Application of Safeguards, the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, and the Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident, Convention on the Prohibition of Nuclear Terrorist Acts. Mongolia has consistently fulfilled its international obligations in these areas.
The current Law on Nuclear Energy, initially passed in 2009, comprises eight chapters and 51 articles. Over the years, it has seen 15 amendments that have modified 38 provisions. However, with major constitutional amendments, as well as significant shifts in Mongolia’s socio-economic and legal landscape, there is a pressing need to update the legislation to reflect these changes.
In conjunction with the proposed revisions, amendments to key laws such as the General Law on Taxation, Law on Investment, and the Law on Company are also under consideration, ensuring a comprehensive legislative overhaul.
