On February 14, 2025, Prime Minister of Mongolia L. Oyun-Erdene held a meeting with Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, in Harbin. This marks the fifth meeting between the two leaders. Both parties expressed their gratitude for the successful implementation of projects and programs discussed during previous meetings and visits, emphasizing their practical outcomes.
The Mongolian government has signed an agreement with the Chinese government to connect the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod port, identified as the top priority among Mongolia's 14 mega projects. Following the signing, Prime Minister L. Oyun-Erdene made a statement highlighting the significance of the agreement. He noted that the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod railway will become the second cross-border railway connecting Mongolia and China, following the 1955 agreement that linked Mongolia’s Zamiin-Uud port with China’s Erenhot port.
Prime Minister L. Oyun-Erdene on the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Railway Agreement “The Government of Mongolia and the Government of the People's Republic of China have signed an agreement to connect Mongolia's Gashuunsukhait border port with China's Gantsmod port via a cross-border railway—a project that has been stalled for 17 years.
The commissioning of this railway will double Mongolia's port capacity and increase annual coal sales revenue by $1.5 billion.
This additional revenue will strengthen the National Sovereign Wealth Fund's Accumulation Fund and provide a foundation for implementing long-awaited tax reforms.”
Minister of Road and Transport B. Delgersaikhan on the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Railway Project “The two sides have agreed to begin construction of the railway connecting the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod port in April. Prime Minister L. Oyun-Erdene has emphasized the importance of giving this project special attention.”
Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources B. Tuvaan on the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Railway Agreement “The agreement between the Government of Mongolia and the Government of the People's Republic of China to connect the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod port via a cross-border railway has been finalized.
