The year we wrote – 2024

During the final days of the year, when majestic pine trees and dazzling decorations transform ordinary days into extraordinary fantasies filled with special aspirations, “Mining Insight” magazine celebrated its third anniversary. Though three years may seem like a brief history and limited experience, these 36 months and 1,095 days have seen us publish 37 issues with over 900 articles, enriching Mongolia’s mining information archive in two languages. To reflect on the rhythm of 2024, we revisited all 12 issues of the year as the New Year approached. Some of the key headlines included: “Mining and Election Campaigns to Collide Once Again,” “PDAC 2024: Honoring Innovation and Tradition,” “What Progress Has the Port Recovery Made?” “Sovereign Wealth Fund Law and the State's Super Participation,” “B. Nyamtaishir of MAK: My Wish Is to Establish Quality Factories in Mongolia,” “11 Minerals Mongolia May Propose as Critical,” “Public Hearing on Licenses and the Conflict Between MRPAM and Governors,” “Mining Representatives Gain Seats in Parliament,” “Boroo Gold and Steppe Gold Merger: Who Benefits More?” “The Start of a Steel Plant: Bold Tumur Eruu Gol’s 30 Years,” “Mining Objectives in the Government Action Plan,” “Next Candidates for Strategic Deposits,” “Minister Ts. Tuvaan's Order to Enrich the Wealth Fund,” “Mining Week with Mining Pro,” “Expansion of State Ownership in Mining,” “Time to Revive Erdenes Tavantolgoi Shares,” “New Relations for Critical Raw Materials,” “Will the China Energy and Orano Mining Investment Deal Repeat the Mistakes of 15 Years Ago?” “Is the Commodity Market Ready for Trump 2.0?” and “The Peak Cycle of Erdenes Tavantolgoi.”

Every page vividly captures events by the month and day, providing a glimpse of the marks 2024 has left on Mongolia's mineral resources sector and the transformations it has triggered. This is the magic of words and the wonder of recording events in writing. The pages recount times overwhelmed by preelection political promises, with politicians pledging much and delivering little, leading to increased pressure on the mineral sector and boundless state intervention. Decisions that could set Mongolia back for decades or unlock national progress, criticism of budget deficits, and uneven economic policies affecting citizens all unfold across the pages. Amid these challenges, the 12 issues also highlight the tireless efforts of the mineral sector, where private companies continue building essential infrastructure, gradually unlocking the country's economic growth. The voices and ideas of those who have led, overcome challenges, and strengthened through success remain deeply embedded in the magazine, showcasing a commitment to progress and development. In this yearending issue, we are pleased to focus on the achievements and commemorate the "Peak Cycle of Erdenes Tavantolgoi." Much like human life, full of twists and turns, the mining company in question has a remarkable destiny. Since its inception, it has faced adversity, caught under the weight of political promises and debt, and its leaders have repeatedly been embroiled in controversies. However, this company is witnessing its historical peak this year. Erdenes Tavantolgoi is the only company in Mongolia in which every citizen holds a personal account and shares. Hence, every Mongolian has the right to demand greater transparency, oversight, governance, and greater achievements from this enterprise.

With its stateowned affiliation, the special resources it has, and the moment in time, this company is achieving recordhigh sales and profits in 2024, setting a new benchmark in its history. We present these noteworthy figures for your attention. Finally, I would like to note that the biggest driving force behind our success and achievements is you, our Readers and Clients. Regardless of whether you are a miner, engineer, economist, or social activist, we are confident that you are contributing to what our country needs at this time. Thank you for your sincere efforts to make Mongolia a better place. Thank you as well to the editorial team, who strives together to meet the intellectual demands of our readers with well founded, substantial writings. May the new year bring confidence to everyone’s heart, strength to their hands, and inspiration to their minds.
