Today (2025.03.17) the State Great Khural is set to ratify the intergovernmental agreement for the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway, marking a major milestone in Mongolia’s economic transformation. As one of the 14 mega development projects, this railway will double Mongolia’s port capacity, increase annual coal exports from 83 million to 165 million tons, and generate an additional $1.5 billion in annual revenue.
With construction set to begin in May and completion expected within 2-3 years, Mongolia is entering a new era of economic opportunity.
This project is Mongolia’s second railway connection with China, following the Zamiin-Uud–Ereen railway, which was established in 1955. Strengthening our connectivity with China and the global market will strengthen our economic resilience and boost trade and investment, which is more critical than ever given the current uncertainty in global markets and falling coal prices.
Once this project is underway, it will lay the economic foundation for comprehensive tax and social insurance reforms.
